Landscape Biographies for Saba and St. Eustatius: Past, Present, and Future in the Face of Climate Change
SCOPE
Commissioned by the island governments of Saba and St. Eustatius, this project develops comprehensive landscape biographies to guide future development while preserving the islands’ cultural and natural heritage. Through interdisciplinary research and community collaboration, the biographies explore the islands’ geological formation, pre-colonial and colonial history, natural and intangible heritage, and climate risks. The aim is to identify core values worth protecting and provide concrete tools—such as GIS-based maps and a climate narrative—for spatial planning and climate adaptation. The project is led by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) and contributes to the culture agendas of both islands.
